 ## Dyscalculia

### What is dyscalculia?

" Mathematics disorder, formerly called developmental arithmetic disorder, developmental acalculia, or dyscalculia, is a learning disorder in which a person's mathematical ability is substantially below the level normally expected based on his or her age, intelligence, life experiences, educational background, and physical impairments. This disability affects the ability to do calculations as well as the ability to understand word problems and mathematical concepts." We can learn to count without understanding what is the number 12, without understanding how it is to pass from  units to tens, from tens to hundreds ... and why. After a thousand, what is there? What is a million? The place of a number and what it represents is a Chinese puzzle.

It may be  possible  to apply the mechanism of simple addition or complex addition, without understanding when or why to do it.

One can learn, relearn and spend hours on time tables without retaining them.  An it is yet a new task to learn to resolve a two-digit multiplication.

And division ? It is always difficult! What is a remainder? What does it mean ?

Do not speak about math problems, they are too difficult! These are each another rebus or puzzle, and have nothing to do with operations!

##### So how to overcome it? What can be done about it ?

The job is, essentially, to put the foundation in place.

Initially, the principle is the same as for dyslexia : the person must be oriented, and  learn to control the energy. Then we work some concepts such as change, consequence, cause, effect, before, after, time. All these concepts are present in any operation in any math problem.

Then come  digits, numbers, the place of numbers, the various operations, and finally calculating on paper, and solving problems.

How long does it take for this ?

8 days are needed, with 6 hours per day.

Parents and teachers may see the following signs of mathematics disorder in a child's schoolwork:

• problems counting

• difficulty memorizing multiplication tables

• inability to grasp the difference between such operations as addition and subtraction

• poor computational skills; many errors in simple arithmetic

• slowness in performing calculations

• difficulty arranging numbers in order (from smallest to largest, for example)

• inability to grasp information on graphs

• difficulty copying numbers or problems

• inability to grasp the concept of place value

• inability to align two or three digit numbers to do calculations

• difficulty understanding word problems

• inability to understand mathematical symbols.
